Advent 2020: Let’s get ready for Jesus!

As we prepare for a very different Christmas, let’s take time to prepare spiritually.  Graham has produced a very simple guide to help us do that by suggesting a short Bible reading for each day and some questions to reflect on.  This will begin on Saturday and will be available on the church website and on Facebook.  If you want a copy by email, please ask Graham – gpnash@churchofscotland.org.uk

Steph Macleod – Let there be light

When I sail the lonely deep, when the midnight watch I keep

I stand amazed as stars on the billows gleam

And though I know a storm is rising, high above the dark horizon

I know o Lord, I know You are here with me.

So let there be light, Lord let it shine

Out of Your heart and here into mine.

When it rains from Heaven above, let it rain sweet heavenly love

Let there be light, o Lord, let there be light.

There’s a call on the restless tide like a long and endless night

And it breaks the bow like a raging symphony

And though I may be far from shore I am anchored to Heaven’s door

And o Lord I know, I know You are here with me.

So let there be light and Lord let it shine

Out of Your heart here into mine

Lead me out of the eye of the storm

Into the promise of the crimson dawn

Let there be light, o Lord, let the be light.

Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough

Find me here o Lord, surrounded by an ocean of love.

Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough

Find me here o Lord, surrounded in an ocean of love.

Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough

Find me here o Lord, I’m surrounded by an ocean of Your love.

So let there be light and Lord let it shine

Out of Your heart, here into mine.

Lead me out of the eye of the storm

Into the promise of the crimson dawn

Let there be light, O Lord, O Lord, let there be light

Let there be light, sweet Jesus, let there be light,

Let there be light, O Lord, let there be light.

Call to worship – from Psalm 13 and Psalm 139.7-12

How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord

Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word

What more can He say to you than He has said

You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled.

In every condition, in sickness, in health

In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth

At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,

As days may demand, shall your strength ever be.

Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed

For I am your God and will still give you aid

I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand

Upheld by my gracious, omnipotent hand.

When through fiery trials your pathways shall lie,

My grace, all sufficient, shall be your supply

The flame shall not hurt you; my only design

Your dross to consume, and your gold to refine.

The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose

I will not, I cannot desert to its foes

That soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake

I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

Prayer of approach to God

Together Time – Angels

All Heaven waits with bated breath
For saints on earth to pray
Majestic angels ready stand
With swords of fiery blade
Astounding power awaits a word
From God’s resplendent throne
But God awaits our prayer of faith
That cries ‘Your will be done.’

Awake, O church, arise and pray
Complaining words discard
The Spirit comes to fill your mouth
With truth, His mighty sword
Go place your feet on Satan’s ground
And there proclaim Christ’s name
In step with heaven’s armies march
To conquer and to reign.

Now in our hearts and on our lips
The word of faith is near
Let heaven’s will on earth be done
Let heaven flow from here
Come blend your prayers with Jesus’ own
Before the Father’s throne
And as the incense clouds ascend
God’s holy fire rains down.

Soon comes the day when with a shout
King Jesus shall appear
And with Him all the church
From every age, shall fill the air
The brightness of His coming shall
Consume the lawless one
As with a word the breath of God
Tears down his rebel throne.

One body here, by heaven inspired
We seek prophetic power
In Christ agreed, one heart and voice
To speak this day, this hour
In every place where chaos rules
And evil forces brood
Let Jesus’ voice speak like the roar
Of a great multitude.

Bible Reading            Luke 1.1-25

How good is the God we adore!

Our faithful, unchangeable friend:

His love is as great as His power

And knows neither knows measure nor end.

For Christ is the First and the Last;

His Spirit will guide us safe home;

We'll praise Him for all that is past

And trust Him for all that's to come.

Sermon – You’re going to have a baby! (1)

Hark, the glad sound! The Saviour comes,

The Saviour promised long!

Let every heart prepare a throne,

And every voice a song.

He comes, the prisoners to release,

In Satan’s bondage held;

The gates of brass before Him burst,

The iron fetters yield.

He comes the broken heart to bind,

The wounded soul to cure,

And with the treasures of His grace,

To enrich the humble poor.

Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,

Thy welcome shall proclaim;

And heaven’s eternal arches ring,

With Thy beloved Name.

Prayer of thanksgiving and intercession

Longing for light, we wait in darkness

Longing for truth, we turn to You.

Make us Your own, Your holy people

Light for the world to see.

Christ, be our light!

Shine in our hearts.

Shine through the darkness.

Christ, be our light!

Shine in Your church gathered today.

Longing for peace, our world is troubled

Longing for hope, many despair.

Your word alone has power to save us.

Make us your living voice.

Longing for food, many are hungry

Longing for water, many still thirst.

Make us Your bread, broken for others

Shared until all are fed.

Longing for shelter, many are homeless

Longing for warmth, many are cold.

Make us Your building, sheltering others

Walls made of living stone.

Many the gifts, many the people

Many the hearts that yearn to belong.

Let us be servants to one another

Making Your kingdom come.

Benediction

Wings of the Morning – John Rutter

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost part of the sea;

Even there shall thy hand lead me,

And thy right hand shall hold me.

If I climb up into heaven, thou art there;

If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

O Lord, thou hast searched me and known me.

Thou knowest my down-sitting and my uprising,

Thou understandest my thought afar off.

Thou compassest my path and my lying down,

And art acquainted with all my ways,

For there is not a word in my tongue,

But lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether:

Whither shall I go from thy spirit?

Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

Lord, thou art there.

If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me;

Even the night shall be light about me.

Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee.

But the night shineth as the day.

If I take the wings of the morning,

Thou art there, O Lord, thou art there.
